113 Reasons Why

The second season of 13 Reasons Why (13RW) is set to air on NETFLIX on Friday, May 18, 2018.  Many reputable national organizations have issued warnings about the potential harms of the series, especially among vulnerable young people.

The National Association of School Psychologists recommends vulnerable youth (such as those struggling with depression, anxiety, previous suicidal behavior, or trauma) not watch the series and most certainly not to watch the series alone.

There is consistent evidence of the negative impact detailed and graphic portrayals of suicide in media have, including the increased risk of copycat suicides or suicide contagion among young people.  Research studies conducted worldwide consistently show that following a detailed portrayal of suicide in the media or in film/TV, the risk of suicide involving the same method increases in the weeks and months following the story release.  In addition, 13RW violates many of the media guidelines for suicide reporting including glamorizing and memorializing suicide, showing graphic and specific details of the methods involved in a suicide, oversimplifying the factors surrounding a suicide, etc.  (International Association for Suicide Prevention)

The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) assembled a list of resources to help people talk about the series and suicide risk and prevention.
